The Final Fantasy IX Anime Is Officially in Production!

The anime was first announced in 2021.
EuroVisual has officially revealed that the Final Fantasy IX anime is officially in production. They have the anime listed on their website. The title of the anime will be “Final Fantasy: Legacy of the Black Mages.” Its first season will be ten episodes, with each episode being 22 minutes.
The Legacy of the Black Mages is set ten years after the original events of Final Fantasy IX. It will act as a sequel to the original game. The anime will tell the story of Vivi’s children, Mel, Koln, Thea, and Doc. They are the last black mages in Gaia.
The four children are living peaceful lives in the city of Alexandria. But tragedy strikes as Koln discovers that Mel is frozen like a statue. Could their father’s tragic legacy finally be catching up with them?
Originally, the anime was produced by a previous French production company known as Cyber Group Studios. The character designs were made by Charles Lefebvre. The anime’s target audience is children aged 8 to 13.
Unfortunately, Cyber Group Studios filed for bankruptcy in 2024. Thankfully, EuroVisual was able to pick up anime and continues its production. The original team from La Chouette is still co-producing the anime. Square Enix is also a partner and supervisor of the project. The current target date for the anime is 2028.
This is excellent news. I’m happy that the FF9 anime is back in production. It’s also great that Square Enix is still allowing this anime to happen. Along with many other people, I’m happy they are trusting other studios to expand their IPs in different media.
I’m also intrigued by the story. Vivi was the one character who was tied to the major theme of the original FF9. The theme of life. I’m wondering how the lives and legacy of Vivi’s children will unfold.
While I’m not the target audience for this anime. I’ll still be watching it. Final Fantasy IX is a great FF. So, seeing its tale and legacy continuing is something I look forward to.
